History of Christmas Presents

Saint Nicholas, a.k.a. St Nikolaus, was bishop of Myra (now part of Turkey) in the 4th century. He was well known for his generosity, care for children and the giving of gifts. He had a reputation for secretly placing coins in the shoes left out for him. The 6th of December, feast day of Saint Nicholas, is in many countries marked by the giving of gifts. During the Reformation, the gift giver was renamed to Christ Child or Christkindl and the date moved to Christmas eve.
The term Santa Claus is a derivation of Saint Nicholas, (or more obviously of St Nikolaus) and his red clothing originates in the red colour of the bishop's attire. When Santa Claus delivers Christmas presents we are reminded on the generosity of Saint Nicholas.
